St Mary’s Island – The Caribbean Islands in India

Situated near Udupi, karnataka state of India is this beautiful and not so popular island.

The best thing about the island is that it is made up of sea shells. Yes, you heard it right.
you will rarely find sand in this beach. The shores are made of sea shells, both small, big and powdered by nature to look like sand.

there are no accomodations available on this island. you can walk from one end of the island to the other end in 3 minutes and usually is a favorite movie shoot location due to the light blue and crystal clear water.

if you are very lucky, you will be able to spot sea turtles on the shore.

first time I visited this island back in 2008 and there were only 10 people in the entire island and was a good experience.
however, the next time, there were probably 70 to 100 of them, but was still far better than the crowded beaches.

To reach here, you need to take the boat operated by Karnataka tourism department from Malpe fisheries and roughly takes 30 minutes to reach the island.

Also, don’t miss the Malpe beach and the fishing boat yard with the fresh catch and the vendors auctioning their catch.

The boats are not operated during monsoon and on days with strong wind or water current. Hence, plan your trip during non monsoon season, if you want to visit this place.
